Andy Klunder studied painting at Winchester School of Art and stage design & sculpture at the Slade School, London. After graduating his work developed in terms of sculpture, encompassing video, photography and drawing, with occasional forays into design for dance. Enduring themes throughout his practice have been those of the ephemeral and the transient, chance and the accidental within the context of an ordered whole, and the construction of meaning in terms of the Open Work. Until 2014 he was Head of Fine Art at the University of Plymouth. Since leaving teaching he has concentrated solely on establishing an active studio practice which re-engages with painting as the primary means of image-making. "We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time." The exhibition’s title, Specular, is an ambiguous term simultaneously suggesting the power of enhanced vision, far-reaching observation, reflection and insight, and the very opposite of those faculties, a lack of clarity, obscurity and deflection; a world of illusion and shadows, tricks of the light.
